About Us
The HKSCA is a not-for-profit, non-government organisation that started in 1991 to support the development of healthier school canteens across NSW. Today the goals have expanded to include the entire “health promoting school community”, incorporating teachers, school principals, parents, the food industry, canteen managers and volunteers.
The members of the Association are drawn from schools, health professionals,
educators and organisations with an involvement in food services in schools.
Recent development of the NSW School Canteen Strategy has seen an increase
in the number of schools becoming members and receiving information, advice
and support on the operation of a healthy canteen. As at June 2007, Healthy
Kids SCA has 1800 members.
The broad objectives of the Association are to:
_ Raise awareness about sound eating habits in schools
_ To support schools and others in getting children to develop a lifelong appreciation of healthy foods to prevent the onset of childhood obesity which leads to life threatening diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer.
_ Support the NSW Government’s Fresh Tastes Strategy and work to increase supply of the healthier fresh unprocessed foods in schools
_ Increase the quantity available, and sales of, nutritious foods in school canteens so that healthy food choices are easy choices for kids at school
_ Empower schools to take responsibility for providing economically viable, hygienic and nutrition oriented canteen services
_ Support and promote food and catering industries wishing to provide nutritious foods for schools through fostering positive relationships
_ Provide support and advice to schools on how to make healthy food choices easy choices for school children
_ Develop practical and useful food and nutrition resources for the use of schools
